As global politics took the stage this week nothing could compare to the shtick produced in the presidential Primary campaigns already by inanimate objects.
There was the thunderous punctuation of an electrical storm, then a fly[s] admiringly explored the hair of Senators Biden and Dodd -- probably not the same fly but it was hard to tell.
Trust Rudy to try to top the flies by staging a lovey-dovey cell phone call from his wife to interrupt his talk to the gun folks. It seems he has turned this trick before. Maybe it will start a trend.
In the present lull between debates, retired army brass and brassy journalists got together on C-Span to discuss why the media failed to respond to the Iraq war they observed instead of what the Bush administration told them to report.
They all agreed that it was “distrust of each other” engendered during the Viet Nam war that was the cause. Although some mentioned that their editors gave some instruction about what they wanted covered, no one on the panel even eluded to the corporate influence on the editors or that there was such a thing.
Wouldn’t it just be great if these journalists were put up on a stage and we all got to ask them specific questions and that their answers would be published by honest journalist – if any could be found in this country?
True, they might lose their jobs or land in Gitmo if they told the truth, but just for once we would be spared the soul-sickening spectacle of reporters critiquing themselves, endlessly portraying themselves as blameless instead of gutless.
Who does not still see in their mind’s eye these reporters kissing-up to and laughing at jokes from Rummy, the guy who used jokes as non-answers? Or even now, how the Washington Press Corps lionizes Bush and giggle like school boys at his attempts at humor?
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, doubtless a bad person, still served as a huge contrast to Bush by showing some guts at Columbia U. Certainly he took a lot of gaff from Columbia’s President, coming out still ticking and smiling.
It’s a sure bet that if anyone spoke truth to power in that manner to Bush, he would just leave after the first paragraph and have the speaker beheaded. He does not even allow confrontation with Americans that disagree with him.
What a week it was. At least the flies and cell phone were real – or were they?

TWO FLIES AND A CELL

WOMEN'S HISTORY - MORE THAN JUST A MONTH
Rudy has tossed out what the media is calling the first negative ad in the Primaries. Couched in the “Swift boating” motif, it is directed against Hillary.
Of course Hillary has been criticized by John, Barack and their wives. All to be expected since front runners are traditionally targets, but Michele’s latest criticism was troublesome and disappointing.
Despite the fact that Michelle is an intelligent professional woman who has made many contributions to her husband’s campaign, she has recently become somewhat of a joke; carelessly saying things about him in interviews and on the stump that make people feel uncomfortable.
She showed that same lack of care when referencing Hillary recently. It disappointed her fans and reflected badly on her as a future possible first lady. As a woman and an attorney, she should know women’s history and be more careful of what she puts out as facts.
Michelle accused Hillary of using her gender as a reason for people to vote for her and declared that Barack did not use his color that way. True, Hillary speaks to women; to their hopes and fears and mostly to their experiences as women, sisters, wives and mothers. But just listen to Barack’s subject matter, cadence and voice change when he speaks to a Black audience. Compare it to when he speaks in the Senate or to mostly White audiences.
Obviously each candidate uses what they have, what they are. What we fault Michele for is not knowing or ignoring women’s history of oppression in this country. Most women have lived it or studied it in school. We reference this URL for her to inform herself, perhaps she can relate to these pages by a sister attorney: http://www.thelizlibrary.org/read/
Briefly here: Historically, women were in most ways slaves; they were non citizens; they could not own property, their children could be taken from them, they were denied advanced education and they had no protection from maltreatment by fathers, brothers, husbands or other males, to give a few examples.
However, they went out and fought for freedom. Women were vocal and instrumental in helping to abolish slavery. They fought for the right to vote, not just for themselves but for the recently emancipated slaves. Despite their efforts, Congress gave the vote only to Black MEN.
That oversight of history will not soon be forgotten by either black or white women. They see in their daily lives even today that there is a tenuous connection between the laws assuring their equality/freedom and reality. It’s not a question of women and men taking turns for jobs or office. For many of us it is a question of equal treatment or even survival.
This country’s massive media continues to ignore the plight of women in military schools, bases and foreign postings; women who have been mistreated, assaulted and raped by the very officers they are forced to obey under the military code.
Cartoonist, Garry Trudeau, almost alone, has addressed this problem again and again. In his latest strip on this subject: Iraq veteran, rape victim, Melissa, is pictured speaking with her counselor who observes that the army did not protect her.
Melissa agrees and adds that she was still ordered to work with her abuser even after she had reported his abuse. Then she tells of how she was cleaning her weapon one day and he came in. She pointed the gun at him without thinking and it froze him. For a brief time he experienced feeling absolutely powerless. Then she lowered the gun and walked away. She observed that it was “the closest I ever came to Justice…”
Many women in America still face similar situations in the workplace, on the streets and even in their homes. They know what the laws have promised, laws that their government has continued to overlook or neglect to enforce. It is unthinkable that anyone campaigning for women’s votes would trivialize it.

FOOLED YA AGAIN SUCKERS
“Ya can’t bring the troops home from Iraq until I say so, I’m the decider!” Once again, Lucy [Bush] held the football and urged Charlie Brown [Congressional Democrats] to kick it and once again, pulled it away so the kicker fell flat on his ass.
Lies and false promises got us to invade Iraq just as they continually are used to keep us in there. With each lie comes a “football” of concession: that we are making progress and just need a little more time, a few more troops, then we’ll leave.
It seems that everyone, Dems, many Repugs, Iraqi and most of the world want us to get out. But a megalomaniac stands in the way with signing statements and veto pen.
Why don’t legislators send a bill that will specifically fund the withdrawal of troops from Iraq to avoid the accusation that withholding funds for that war is harmful to the troops? Let Admiral Fallon testify.
Voters are vocal in their demand that we get out of there but the legislators are between a rock and a hard place. They see that the power is not with the people but is with Bush, so Repugs continue to back him and Dems don’t have enough of a majority. The buzz/spin is that the war can be and must be won. But we still have no idea what “winning” means.
Why this stalemate? Bush and the Repugs know that the Dems will take over the government in ’08 so they intend to hold on until the Dems force them to withdraw – then anything that results can be blamed on the Dems.
The Dems in Congress are aware of this. They still have no idea how to force fairness in reporting on the media. They see how easily Bush is able to turn the Dem groups against each other. They see that their support from the voters is shaky.
Just look at how Senator Kerry turned against Move On just because of an ad that adversely portrayed General Petraeus. When some Dems actually stand up and slug back at the Repugs, they should be cheered, not censured. But they sure do great slugging and demeaning each other.
With the aid of the media, it will be made to appear that the Dems started the war in the first place, refused to fund it adequately and retreated so the war was lost.
Despite the fact that Bush is holding the lives of our troops hostage to his grandiose war, history will be re-spun to make it appear that Bush and the Repugs supported our brave troops while the Dems forced them into retreat and humiliation just as they were on the verge of winning.
Shame on us.

PORCELAIN GOD OF LOVE
GenderGappers 2007 – 037
PORCELAIN GOD OF LOVE
Once again Eros rears his ugly head making more news than all the imminent problems and dangers in the world combined. Funny thing about these Repugs, they keep getting caught for things they accuse the Dems of doing.
And the things they keep getting caught doing are the things they profess to be violently against. Family values are what they profess to live by; they stand up in Congress decrying anyone who does not live by their definition as decreed by their God.
Then, as if we would never notice, they stand together en masse to condemn and punish Larry Craig but give only a slight wrist tap to David Vitter. The difference in treatment is not simply that one strayed into the gay arena while the other’s sin was dalliance with a woman not his wife.
No indeed, the difference is that they were free to forced Craig to announce his resignation from the Senate because he represents the Red State of Idaho. It has a Republican governor who would appoint a Repug to replace him.
Vitter lucked out because he represents a Blue State, Louisiana where the Governor is a Democrat sure to replace him with a Democrat. Repugs in no way would consider any crime bad enough to lose a House seat.
Meanwhile, Fred, the profile head, steps forth into this week’s cesspool of sex. He’s fresh from titillating the media concerning his candidacy for the presidency. They have given him tons of free air time, calling attention to his TV appearances in Law and Order.
The media tells us that he is a movie star like Ronald Reagan from all that TV exposure but somehow we wonder how that can be. His appearance on these episodes are fleeting – only a minute or two. He comes over as a gruff, self serving political whore – not a great character to be a president.
Besides that, in keeping it seems, with this prevailing potty week, his head in profile reminds any student of human anatomy of the glans penis – helmet like and decidedly uncute.
That may endear him to the many still closeted Repugs and other penis worshipers but surely that’s not enough for them to forgive his lobbying on behalf of women’s reproductive rights.
And in the spirit of these nasty, naughty, bad boys, the mass murderer–in-chief, using his cannon fodder as backdrop, smiles and tells the world he owns it and can do anything he pleases.
